Garry Mertins Design

Traditional or contemporary, a room designed by Garry Mertins has a clean “edited feel.”  The designer believes that the foundation of every successful project starts with a well-developed architectural and lighting plan, which is not limited to a specific style or décor. Mertins often mixes old with new.  For example, a great work of modern art with a remarkable piece of antique furniture.  “Texture is also important, “ he says, and he favors mixing wood, stone and metal for a study in contrasts.

When it comes to color, he often works with tone-on-tone patterns to allow strong pieces to stand out.  Mertins started his firm eighteen years ago, but he grew up around design and construction.  Working alongside his father, he would tear out walls, rebuild rooms and absorb as much of his dad’s engineering expertise as possible.  “That’s where I learned my “measure twice, cut once” mandate,” he points out.  Today, he operates a successful design business based on the premise of creating design for his clients that works for their taste and their lifestyle.  The scope of Mertins work ranges from residential to commercial, from traditional to ultra-contemporary, with ongoing projects across the country.
